The
Entrance An hour before you arrive home, your house's thermostat,
which had been set to conserve energy during the day, adjusts hour
HVAC systems to your pre-selected temperature. As you approach the
front door, walkway lights and entryway lights turn on automatically.
As you identify yourself to the biometric security scanner, which
automatically unlocks and opens the front door, the security camera,
powered by the Leviton Integrated Networks system, captures your image.
Anyone can simply look at any TV screen of PC monitor in the house
to know that you're the person at the front door. As you step into
the entryway, you can arm or disarm your security system from the
touch-pad next to the door and check for recorded messages from anyone
who may have stopped by the house while you were away, and select
your lighting and audio/visual preference. |

The
Living Room As you enter the living room, your connected home adjusts
the lights to our just-home-from-work lighting scenario. After the
audio system has retrieved and replayed your day's phone messages,
you hear the soothing strains of a Beethoven concerto - the music
provided by an Internet radio station or your favorite digital music
playlist and played on the iPAQ Music Center. And the blinds, which
were shut during the day, open automatically to let you watch the
sunset. To catch the latest news, you switch from the radio to the
digital TV, one of several in your home that can provide video signals
from several sources (cable, satellite, VCR, DVD, PVR), again thanks
to the Leviton Integrated Networks system. With the digital TV and
the Catipultdvd, both from Lumenati NetTV, you can surf the Web and
watch TV simultaneously. And with your handheld iPAQ Pocket PC, you
can check your calendar to see what events were planned for the evening.

The
Kitchen Thinking about dinner, you move to the kitchen, followed by
the sounds of Beethoven. You grab a gourmet frozen dinner, scan its
barcode into the microwave's reader, which fetches the cooking directions
from the Internet, allowing the microwave to automatically adjust
the cooking power and time for the dinner you've selected. Then, you
use the kitchen's touchscreen to turn down the volume on the audio
system so you can speak to the voice-activated PC in the kitchen planning
center. As you plan a dinner for an upcoming family birthday, your
PC checks your needs against the pantry inventory, creates a list
of missing items, and sends an order to an online grocery service,
which will deliver the items to your door. The kitchen PC is part
of a home-wide network of PCs and laptops, connected either via Ethernet
or wireless technology, thanks to iPAQ networking products. In addition,
you can network your home using phone line and Home PNA products.

The
Home Theater While waiting for your frozen dinner to cook, you relax
in your home theater, which boasts a 60-inch theater-quality screen,
instant access to thousands of movies, the most up-to-date surround
sound technology, and Internet access to movie and music providers.
As you sift through a list of available movies, from your DVD library
and your PVR selections, the television screen displays a message
from the microwave, announcing that your dinner is ready. Later, while
watching a movie, you use cinema-style controls, powered by the Leviton
Integrated Networks system, to select the proper lighting ambience.

The
Dining Room While eating your meal in the dining room, you use your
home phoneline network's Web connection and the iPAQ microprojector
to initiate a videoconference with your wife, who's working late at
the office. The flat-panel screen on the wall switches from an art
print you selected from an Internet provider to a live Web-cam view
of your wife. Your wireless network lets you use your PDA to adjust
the dining room lights, which are connected to your home's integrated
network distribution center, to match any mood (dining, party, daytime
activities). As you eat, you talk with your wife about your day, and
she reminds you that you have no clean shirts. |

The
Utility Room As you enter the utility room with a basket of clothes,
the light turns on automatically. After you load the clothes in the
washer, the machine automatically adjusts the water quantity and temperature
to the type of load. Because the spin rate of the drum isn't quite
fast enough, the washer sends an email to the manufacturer so t hat
a service representative can make an appointment to fix it. The utility
room houses the brains of your smart home: the distribution center
for Leviton Integrated Networks. The distribution center is the central
hub from which Category 5 and RG-6 coaxial cable are run to usage
points throughout the house. The system supports simultaneous Internet
sharing and whole-house audio and multi-room video. When you leave
the utility room, the light turns off automatically. |

The
Nursery No matter where you are in the house, you can use a nearby
TV screen or PC monitor to check on baby in the nursery. A 24x7 camera
keeps tabs on the baby and the nursery's audio system plays a continuous
stream of soothing lullabies that you've selected from a music provider.
In addition, you can use your home automation systems to turn on or
off the lights in the nursery and to monitor and adjust the temperature.

The
Teen's Room Using your home's high-speed Internet connection, which
has firewall protection, Junior's busy in his room, playing a 3-D
video game with friends across town, conducting several instant messaging
sessions, and reading and writing emails while simultaneously researching
a school report on volcanic activity in the state of Washington. When
he finishes his report, he can rip the latest CDs and select movies
from your DVD and PVR libraries. Then, his iPAQ Pocket PC reminds
him that it's time to get ready for his big date. During the week,
he also participates in an online distance learning class offered
by the local community college. |

The
Home Office On your way to bed, you stop in your home office for a
last-minute check of your email and to enter your next day's planned
activities into your online calendar. Your business day will begin
at home with an early morning videoconference with colleagues two
states away. To set the tone for the conference, you download the
theme from "Rocky" and set it to play on your home office's mini audio
system. You will be able to connect to the conference via the appropriate
network quickly and easily, thanks to MultiNetwork Manager from StorageSoft
Solutions. A server in your home office runs the SYS Automation Software
that controls the devices in your home. McAfee's VirusScan protects
the server, and other computers in your home, from viruses. As you
leave, you notice that Junior has printed information from the Internet
about volcanic activity on the home office's network printer. |

The
Master Bedroom You've arrived at your haven from the world, complete
with large-screen TV, music at the touch of a button, specialized
lighting settings, automatic temperature controls, and limitless options
for waking up to Internet radio, CD's or TV programs. You crawl into
bed, ready to relax and watch a movie being transmitted from your
DVD player or PVR in the home theater to the TV in your bedroom. |
| |
The
Garage Even your garage is connected to the outside world. On the
TV in your workshop, you can watch your favorite home repair show,
play a car repair video, or search the Web for the materials you need
for your latest project. And you can sleep easily, knowing that your
sprinkler system will talk to the Weather Channel to determine the
optimal lawn and shrub watering based on the forecast. |
